Technical problem

Handbrake Cable Woes

Sometime back I needed to get a new muffler system, a large pipe version.
After having it fitted, I noticed that the handbrake cable passed between the exhaust pipe and tail shaft.
I did not think that this would be a problem as when the cable was slack it would not touch the tail shaft.
Driving the car for a year now, I went to pulled on the handbrake only to find that the mechanism became very loose and the brake fail light came on. I heard a snap, I only thought I had broken the small cable not the long cable, as this was what I heard happened regularly.
When I did get a chance to see what the problem was I noticed that I had snapped the cable right in the middle.

Approaching the club I got a NOS and secondhand cable.
Fitting the NOS I found that the cable was the right length but the lugs used by the handbrake mechanism were in the wrong location, so I reverted to using the old stock.

This time I put it under the exhaust pipe away from the tailshaft.
I works OK but I am not using the hangers as they will need to be extended. I have not taken the car for a long drive yet.
Cheers, Yowee
